Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, New York City, United States
© 123rf.com
26 Nov 2009
Thanksgiving Day throughout the USA celebrates the harvest with a traditional family feast. In New York City the holiday is further celebrated with this spectacular and colourful parade through the streets of Manhattan - in one of the Big Apple's most eagerly anticipated events. Stars and celebrities appear among the many floats, but are dwarfed by 15 or more 'falloons' (a cross between a float and a balloon) representing familiar cartoon characters. There are more than 50 balloons in all, which are inflated on the evening before the Parade as part of the warm-up. Over 30 clown groups, 10 marching bands and dozens of school bands also form a part of the spectacular. Good vantage points include Columbus Circle and Times Square, but get there early for a place near the front of the big crowds.

Mission
America’s pre-eminent film presentation organization, The Film Society of Lincoln Center was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international cinema, to recognize and support new filmmakers, and to enhance awareness, accessibility and understanding of the art among a broad and diverse film going audience.
As an independent constituent of the world’s foremost performing arts center, the Film Society of Lincoln Center presents a 363-day season that includes premieres of new films from an international roster of established and emerging directors; major retrospectives; in-depth symposia and high profile events. The Film Society is one of those rare institutions whose stature is matched by its popularity, each year welcoming an aggregate audience of more than 200,000 film aficionados, filmmakers and industry leaders of every nationality, age, economic and ethnic group. The organization has been a pioneer among film institutions and one of the film world’s most respected and influential arbiters of cinematic trends and discoveries. François Truffaut, R.W. Fassbinder, Jean-Luc Godard, Pedro Almodóvar, Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson– over the last four decades there is scarcely a major director who has not been introduced to American audiences by the Film Society.
The Film Society is best known for two world-class international festivals – the New York Film Festival (the most famous and prestigious in the country), and New Directors/New Films (celebrating new cinematic artists). It runs a state-of-the-art year-round cinema, the Walter Reade Theater (capacity: 268), and publishes the country’s most respected cinematic journal, Film Comment. Each year the organization presents its annual Gala Tribute honoring legendary stars and industry leaders of our generation at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. At various times of the year the Film Society partners with Hollywood studios to present premieres and special live appearances.

Greenwich Village Halloween
The parade is an annual event that stretches over a mile in Greenwich Village, and according to the New York Times, it is “the best entertainment the people of this City ever give the people of this City. » With fifty thousand costumed participants, artists, dancers, circus performers and musical acts, it is not a surprise that it has become one of the largest events in the country. The key to the competition is creativity, and the wilder the costume, the better!
The parade started off in 1973 with mask maker and puppeteer Ralph Lee who staged a puppet show for the children of his friends, family and neighbours in the Village. After the second year, the «Theater for the new city» stepped forward to present the show on a larger scale, and by the eighth year, the audience had grown to 100 000 !
The Halloween Parade begins on Sixth Avenue at Spring Street, and continues north along Sixth Avenue to 23rd Street.
Who Participates in New York's Village Halloween Parade?
Nearly 50,000 people participate in the annual Halloween Parade, including costumed marchers, puppeteers, bands and more. Anyone who is interested in participating in the Halloween Parade can -- just arrive at the beginning of the parade between 6:30 and 8 p.m and you can join the fun.
New York's Village Halloween Parade Overview
A New York City tradition since 1973, New York's Village Halloween Parade is the largest Halloween celebration in the world. The parade features puppets, marchers and marching bands, as well as a limited number of floats and cars. New York's Village Halloween Parade is the only night time parade in New York City and is a fun and unique way to celebrate Halloween.
New York's Village Halloween Parade Tips
•Dress for the weather -- the temperature can drop significantly once the sun goes down.
•Be prepared for crowds -- this is a popular event, it's dark and it can be hard to keep your group together. Pick a meeting point and time in case you get separated.
•Parade watchers start lining up 2 hours before the parade begins -- with some persistance (& walking) you should be able to find a prime viewing spot up to an hour before the parade begins.
•This is a busy night for bars and restaurants along the parade route -- if you're planning dinner after the parade, consider making reservations (especially if you're in a group).

Fall 09
I love autumn in New York (the season, that is, not the bad Richard Gere movie). The air is crisp, the leaves are changing color in the parks, and the subways are no longer as hot as coal furnaces.
There is plenty of fun to be had in New York City this fall. We've got festivals, football, medieval jousting, New York institutions like the Village Halloween Parade and the NYC Marathon, and more. Better start planning now.
