How to log on to the Lower Manhattan Wireless Network

First, you must be in one of the 8 active hotspot locations: City Hall Park, Bowling Green Park, the World Financial Center Winter Garden, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at 55 Water Street, Wall Street Park, 60 Wall Street Atrium, Stone Street, or the South Street Seaport (Pier 17 Food Court and Back Deck).

Hardware Requirement

A laptop computer or personal digital assistant (PDA) with a WiFi/802.11b wireless network adapter (the adapter is standard in most high-end laptops and available seperately in most computer stores for approximately $50).

Software Requirement
Any Web browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape).

Connecting to the Network
1. Launch your Web browser. The Lower Manhattan Wireless Portal will appear.
2. Click on the "Log On to the Internet" button.
3. Read the Terms of Service and click "I Agree" if you choose to continue to the Internet.

Once you are connected, all Internet services including e-mail, instant messaging and Web browsing are now available for you to use. A popup window will appear. Do not close this window. You can click on this window to return to the wireless network home page, where you can access information about the surrounding neighborhood.
Troubleshooting
A few users may need to adjust their software settings to access the Lower Manhattan Wireless Network. If you have difficulty connecting, try the following steps:

■Make sure that your Web browser is not set to use a proxy server. For Internet Explorer, this setting can be found in the Windows Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings.

■Set your wireless network adapter's Network Name (or ESSID) to "FREE_Downtown_Alliance." This can be found by selecting the wireless network adapter either in the system tray or through the start menu and then adjusting the "settings".

■Configure your TCP/IP settings to obtain an internet address automatically using DHCP.
